Ultimate Last Minute Cram

Moments away from your interview? Here's your cheat sheet.

1. Tell me about yourself / Please introduce yourself

The Goal: A 45-second summary of your resume.

  • Start with your education.
  • Then move to your job history.

2. Why should we hire you?

Go down the posted requirements of the job from the job posting.

For each one, say how you meet it or at least can handle it.

3. What is your strength?

Say something they are looking for in the job description.

Pick something you have or you've done.
(It's okay if you end up repeating yourself from a previous answer!)

4. Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

"Right here in this job. I intend to stay doing something that I love."

5. Why did you leave your last job?

"I'm ready to do more."

6. What is your weakness?

Use the "fix-it" formula:

"Oh, I do X (which is good)...

...but it can lead to Y (which is bad)...

...but then I do Z and that completely fixes the problem."

7. What are your salary expectations?

⚠️ THIS IS A TRAP!

  • Never give a number.
  • Don't negotiate unless you've got a job offer.
  • Try not to answer directly: "I need more details before I'd really be able to say."
  • Or ask: "No problem, is there an approved range for this position?"
  • If pressured: Give a wide range (really low to really high) where both numbers are a stretch but still possible.

8. How do you handle stress?

"I actually handle it very well."

THEN STOP TALKING. Let them move on.

If needed: "Some stress is inevitable, but it's never been a problem for me in the past."

9. What is this gap in your employment history?

  • "I went back to school."
  • "I did some volunteering."
  • "I took some training to enhance my professional capabilities."

10. Do you have any questions for us?

  • "What challenges do you see ahead for a person in this role?"
  • "Can you describe the types of people that are generally successful in this role?"
